Getting started To install the LAN Commander software on your Macintosh, you will need a Macintosh Plus or later, 2 megabytes or more of RAM, and at least System 7.0. To install the LAN Commander menu that lets you issue commands from your computer, you will need a Macintosh that supports color, 2 megabytes or more of RAM, and at least System 7.0. LAN Commander is compatible with all versions of System 7. ◊ Note To determine the version of the system that you are running, use the “About This Macintosh” command in the Finder’s Apple menu. This manual assumes that you have a basic understanding of Macintosh skills, including clicking, dragging, launching applications, opening documents, and saving documents. If you need help with any of these concepts, consult the “Macintosh User’s Guide” that came with your Macintosh computer. Using the installer program The LAN Commander Installer application is used to install LAN Commander onto your Macintosh, update old versions of LAN Commander when you receive new versions, and remove LAN Commander from your computer. To install the software: 1. Restart your computer with extensions disabled by holding down the shift key when restarting. If you are using a security program that remaps the shift key to disable extensions, such as Power On Software’s On Guard program, you will need to hold down the extensions bypass key defined by the security software to disable extensions. 2. Insert the LAN Commander floppy disk into the computer. 3. Launch the “LAN Commander Installer” application by double clicking its icon, or by selecting its icon and choosing Open from the File menu.   Figure 2. Launch this application to install LAN Commander. 4. When the Installer launches, it displays the information window shown below in Figure 3. Click the Continue button to continue.   Figure 3. Information window for the Installer program. 5. The window shown below in Figure 5 will appear and allow you to choose whether to install, remove or update the software. 6. Check the appropriate boxes to select which software to install. Figure 5 demonstrates installing the LAN Commander software, represented by the first checkbox, and the LAN Commander menu, which allows the current workstation to be a Commander workstation. If other software is included on the disk, then each item will have a checkbox allowing you to select whether to install that software item.   Figure 5. Installing software with LAN Commander’s installer program. 7. Click the Switch Disk button to select the destination disk. Figure 5 shows installing the software onto the disk titled “Hard Disk”. If you are not permitted to install software on the selected disk, then the Install button is dimmed. The Installer does not install software on disks across a network. 8. Click the Install button to copy the selected software to the hard disk. Upon installation, you will be asked if you want to continue installing software to other disks, or to quit. 9. Repeat steps 4 through 8 until you have installed the software on the desired disks. 10. Quit from the Installer. 11. Choose Restart from the Finder’s Special menu to restart your Macintosh and activate LAN Commander. ◊ Note LAN Commander installs a default Commander name and password to protect unauthorized users from accessing the LAN Commander menu. The default name for the LAN Commander menu is “Commander”, and the default password for the LAN Commander menu is “command”. The name and password are both case insensitive. To change the name and password for the menu protection, please consult the section on the Configure command in the chapter titled “Using LAN Commander.” Installing on multiple computers If you want to use LAN Commander on multiple computers, you must use the installer application on each computer to initially install the LAN Commander software. Take the installer disk to each computer and perform Steps 1-11 as described above. Make sure you restart each computer immediately after installing LAN Commander. This is true only for the first time you install LAN Commander on a computer. If you already have LAN Commander installed on the computers on your network and are installing a new version, you can use LAN Commander to distribute a new version of the software to those computers. The file that need to be distributed to the remote computers is named “LAN Commander Startup” and is located in the Extensions folder within your System Folder. Distributing this file to the remote computers then restarting them (either with the LAN Commander Restart command, or by going to each computer and restarting each one) will install the new version of LAN Commander for you. Using the installer to update or remove LAN Commander The LAN Commander Installer application can also be used to update LAN Commander when you receive a new version or to remove LAN Commander from your Macintosh. To update LAN Commander: 1. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 outlined above in the section titled “Using the installer program”. 2. Click the “Update” button. After the update has completed, you will be asked if you want to continue or quit. 3. Quit from the Installer. 4. Choose Restart from the Finder’s Special menu to restart your Macintosh and activate the latest version of LAN Commander. To remove LAN Commander: 1. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 outlined above in the section titled “Using the installer program”. 2. Click the “Remove” button. After the software has been removed, you will be asked if you want to continue or quit. 3. Quit from the Installer. 4. Choose Restart from the Finder’s Special menu to restart your Macintosh without LAN Commander installed.
